Muay Thai – or Thai Boxing – is a martial arts originating from Thailand known for its use of punches, kicks, elbows, and knee strikes. It is known in Thailand as the “Art of Eight Limbs”.
Whilst we encourage students to wear Muay Thai shorts, as they allow free movement for kicks and knees whilst honouring the traditional martial arts, comfortable workout wear such as shorts and a t-shirt is fine. Classes are barefoot so no fancy footwear is required.
Muay Thai is one of the most effective martial arts in the world (see the UFC for evidence!), and teaches self-defence, with practical techniques for protecting oneself in real-life situations. Beyond self-defence, Muay Thai offers numerous benefits beyond physical fitness, including improved confidence, discipline, mental toughness, stress relief, and a sense of community and camaraderie among fellow practitioners.

As Muay Thai does not have a formal belt ranking system like some other martial arts, we run classes in keeping with this tradition for our adults’ classes. Progression is based on skill development, knowledge, and experience, and our instructors evaluate students’ readiness to advance to higher levels.
Progress varies depending on individual dedication, natural ability, and consistent training. Patience and commitment are key; learning Muay Thai is a journey rather than a destination. When you’re starting out, aim for 2 classes per week to build skills and fitness gradually. Over time, you may wish to increase you training frequency as you become fitter and stronger to elevate your training and progress.
We have gloves and shinpads for beginners to borrow, though we encourage students to invest in their own gear – gloves, hand wraps, shinpads and groin guards – for hygiene and comfort.

Combined with a balanced diet, consistent training can lead to significant weight loss.

Although Muay Thai does not typically have a formal belt ranking system, we believe children need a physical symbol of their progress, particularly when they’ve worked so hard to achieve their goals. For this reason, we have a grading system with coloured t-shirts, with the colour signifying their rank.
Gradings are held every 3-6 months (depending on the grading) where the instructor will assess each child to see if they’re ready for their next “belt”.
